Pioneers and Pack Burros
This is a developing series of works. Pack burros were crucial to pioneers and prospectors in the American gold rush era. They were prized for their cautious nature, gentle temperament, stamina and sure-footedness, especially in rugged, high-altitude terrain. Despite their smaller size than horses, they could carry heavy loads of mining equipment, building supplies, and other essentials. They were often viewed as partners and companions, and occasionally as part of the “family.”
