A House is Never Done

Oil on Canvas 15 x 30 x 3/4 Private Collection

I had the good fortune to have two delightful and caring in-laws. My father-in-law was a "hands on" man, who was both knowledgeable and capable in all manner of machinery and construction. This work depicts the home he built with a few hired hands in 1951, a home he also personally maintained and improved for nearly 50 years. Early in our marriage, my wife and I contracted the construction of our first home leaving only the landscaping for us to complete. After months of work to finish the landscape (with my father-in-law's help), I laid the final brick on the sidewalk to the front door and loudly proclaimed, "At last, the house is finally done!," to which my father-in-law wryly and knowingly replied, "Son, a house is never done." This work was created for them shortly before they sold the only home they had ever owned.
